Jeffrey Wahl is a 1980 graduate of Franklin & Marshall College (A.B., Government) and the Case Western Reserve University School of Law (J.D., 1983), where he was a Law Review editor. He is a recognized expert on the use of technology in healthcare to improve outcomes, reduce risk and liability, and improve communications between physicians and patients. He speaks on a wide variety of topics in medical risk management, the use of innovative technologies in healthcare, and other topics including patient safety. He is a frequent lecturer and teacher at law schools, medical schools, academic medical centers and to other prominent groups including clinical research professionals. These include the Cleveland Clinic, University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, the bioethics program at the University of Virginia, Wake Forest Law School, Northwestern University’s graduate program in health communications, national anesthesia and surgery conferences, and others. In 2017, Mr. Wahl taught a class at UVA Law School on administrative rulemaking at NIH with Dr. Carrie Wolinetz, NIH’s Associate Director of Science Policy. He teaches regularly in the pediatric anesthesia fellowship program at Children’s Hospital of UPMC. Some of his more notable lectures to medical practitioners include: The Phantom of the Opera-ting Room; What Suzanne Somers Can Teach You About Being an Expert Witness; Recent Trends in Apology Legislation in Healthcare; and Scientific (Dis)honesty, Clinical Research and Retractions. In September, he addressed the annual meeting of the International Health Facility Diversion Association (IHFDA) in Orlando, with a talk entitled From the Operating Room to the Court Room: A Case of Drug Diversion.

In May 2020, he will speak at the Thomas Jefferson University Infertility Counseling Conference on legal issues relating to the 2018 University Hospitals fertility clinic catastrophic tank failure which destroyed 4,000 embryos and human eggs belonging to almost 1000 women and couples, as a member of the plaintiffs’ executive committee and expert witness lead, with a talk entitled: Mr. Wahl was the only non-physician member of the editorial board of a hematology/oncology publication and has been published and quoted in other healthcare journals on various topics including HIPAA, risk management, patient safety, physician-patient communications, paper and electronic charting, hospital and pharmaceutical company litigation, and others. 

He is co-author of a chapter on legal issues in pediatric anesthesia in the 9^th edition of Smith’s Anesthesia for Children and Infants, the pre-eminent text on the subject. He currently is writing a chapter for the 10^th edition, which will focus on the legal implications of the use of opioids with minors, including special informed consent and other complex issues. He chaired the medical advisory board of a Pittsburgh / Silicon Valley healthcare technology company (Invivodata, subsequently acquired by ERT) which developed patient-focused digital data capture applications for FDA drug and device trials and was involved in the early development of electronic prescribing.  Mr. Wahl has been a consultant on risk management, medical-legal and marketing/messaging issues for medical/surgical instrument and technology companies. He also is the founder of a digital informed consent application company which partners with a peer venture founded by an Israeli surgeon/attorney, providing improved literate consent processes for clinical and clinical research (IRB) applications.

He has practiced medical risk management / medical malpractice litigation for more than thirty years in multiple state and federal jurisdictions. He was lead counsel in litigation involving a national group of plastic surgery clinics regarding its false and deceptive sales, marketing and deficient informed consent practices. He has handled legal matters in almost all medical specialties and practices, in healthcare venues from small practices to nationally recognized departments at major academic medical centers. He has worked with expert physicians from all the top 20 hospitals in the nation. Mr. Wahl is one of the founders, directors and president of MIDAS Healthcare Technologies, Inc., a venture developing unique pharmaceutical industry products and systems to prevent diversion of and accidental exposure to controlled substances in the institutional healthcare delivery environment as well as in the outpatient/retail world.  He has assembled an extraordinary team including former high-ranking military officials, world-class physician and science leaders, experts in pharmacy and pharmaceuticals, a former Secretary of Homeland Security, and others. In March 2019, Mr. Wahl was a panelist at the Milken Institute Center for Public Health Conference on Digital Health Innovations Combatting the Opioid Crisis, representing MIDAS.  His work with Milken will continue at its Future of Health Summit in October 2019.
